Preventive Maintenance Foreman, Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica

1-2014–11-2014

Performed oversight of all Operational and Maintenance to ensure the successful and uninterrupted functionality of the station. In an environment where temperatures reached -100F and windchills below -150F. Any critical piece of equipment failure was not an option. Not only would it expose $100s millions of dollars of scientific equipment but directly put the lives of everyone on the station at risk. The O&M requirement encompassed electrical, mechanical, furniture, housing, office systems, and auxiliary science constructions for the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station of Antarctica. The “Station” consisted of the 100,000 SQFT, $150 million Elevated Station building, which is two floors, six-story building that contains the medical bay, the food galley, sleeping quarters, science labs, offices, and emergency power generator. The remaining science buildings were all elevated multi-story platform structures set off as far as a mile from the main structures that ranged in costs from $50 Million to $200 million each. The remaining support facilities such as; fuel storage tanks (50 x 10,000-gallon tanks), logistics, power generation, substantial vehicle maintenance shops, and facilities maintenance shops were housed inside of multiple four-story metal arch structured buried in the snow. Repairs and preventative maintenance for all facilities to include but not limited to; fuel storage pumping, A.P.C., U.P.S., satellite dishes, control rooms, data centers, boilers, HVAC-R, D.D.C. actuators and controls, potable water system, gray line facility, ice tunnels and cryogenic systems. Provided weekly reports and was the onsite representative for facilities and operational issues during weekly conference calls with the National Science Foundation’s United States Antarctica Program executives.

  • Performed lead on NOAA’s Air Research Observatory (A.R.O.) heating repairs to a system that had been inoperable for over ten years. In roughly 16 hours of repairs to a crucial piece of equipment was completed without the need for replacement parts. The issue was corrected by completing the 480V supply and 120V controls side of the heating equipment. The failure was deemed “unrepairable” by prior master electricians and electrical engineers and remained unresolved for ten years. The wiring corrections proved to be a $1+Million saving to NOAA from a proposed engineering review, conceptual design, and equipment renovation plan offered by the prime contractor.
  • Assessed and resolved +5 years of backed logged job requests and work orders.
  • Repurposed malfunctioned equipment, which saved federal resources and increased both operational and energy efficiencies.
