Working on the Island of Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands

Post Date: January 17, 2017 | Category: General Information

Professional Overseas Contractors -

Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands

U.S. Army Kwajalein Atoll/Kwajalein Missile Range (USAKA/KMR) is a remote (located in the Republic of the Marshall Islands), secure activity of the Major Range and Test Facility Base as constituted by DoD.

Kwajalein is one of the world's largest coral atolls as measured by area of enclosed water. Comprising 97 islands and islets, it has a land area of 6.33 mi, and surrounds one of the largest lagoons in the world, with an area of  839 mi. The average height above sea level for all the islands is about 5 ft 11 in.

Its function is to support test and evaluation of major Army and DoD missile systems, Army Space surveillance and object identification, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientific and space programs. Programs supported include Army missile defense, Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) demonstration/validation tests, Air Force Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) development and operational tests, U.S. Space Surveillance Network, and NASA Space Transportation System.

Brief  History

In early 1944, American forces captured the atoll from the Japanese in the Battle of Kwajalein. In the years following, Kwajalein Atoll was converted into a staging area for further campaigns in the advance on the Japanese homeland in the Pacific War. Postwar, the United States used it as a main command center and preparation base in 1946 for Operation Crossroads, the first of several series of nuclear tests (comprising a total of 67 blasts) at the Marshall island atolls of Bikini and Enewetak.

Eleven of the 97 islands are leased by the United States and are part of the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site (RTS), formerly known as Kwajalein Missile Range. RTS includes radar installations, optics, telemetry, and communications equipment, which are used for ballistic missile and missile-interceptor testing and space operations support. Kwajalein has one of five ground stations used in controlling the range that assist in the operation of the Global Positioning System (GPS) navigational system.

Island Living

There are a variety of housing arrangements for families, couples, and unaccompanied personnel. Your housing assignment will be based on a number of factors, including the status of your contract (accompanied or unaccompanied), number of pre-approved dependent family members, and the availability of living quarters. Accompanied or family quarters are similar to stateside homes. Singles quarters are studio style dwellings, all of which contain fully furnished rooms approximately 400 square feet in area, small kitchenettes, private bathrooms, central air conditioning and access to free laundry facilities.

Recreational opportunities at Kwajalein are plentiful. There are pastimes and hobbies to suit almost everyone. You may find yourself getting involved in recreational activities you might never have considered.

  • Play organized sports such as basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer, and inner-tube water polo.
  • Shoot a round of golf at the Holmberg Fairways Golf Course & Country Club.  The course provides nine holes with 18 tees, 2,945 yard par 36, club and locker rental, themed tournaments, driving range, practice putting green, and an air-conditioned bar.
  • Bowl a game at the bowling center and/or compete in a league.
  • Compete in a tournament or play a recreational game of tennis at the outdoor tennis court.
  • Hit the ramps at the skate park.
  • Enjoy free membership to the Ivey Gym Fitness Center available 24 hours a day.

Sailboats such as; Cal 20s, Hobie Cats and Lasers are also available. Kayaks are available for rent for a nominal fee as well. (A Kwajalein/Roi-Namur boat license is required to operate larger boats Boating licensing classes are available for a nominal registration fee.)
  • Join an outrigger canoe team, the surfing club or kite board and windsurf near the perimeter of the island.
  • Explore uninhabited tropical islands and historical sites.
  • Take advantage of swimming opportunities at one of Kwajalein’s two saltwater swimming pools or beautiful beaches.
  • Visit local sea life while reefing, snorkeling in the beautiful tide pools and diving in the ocean surrounding the island.

  • Hang out at the recreation center.  The Adult Recreation Center is available to ages 19 and older.   Activities available include pool, air hockey, ping pong tables, video games, shuffleboard, music room, TV room, weekly movies and Wii computer games.  A conference room, computer access, kitchen and BBQ area are also available.

    Hello All,

As a former island “resident” let’s discuss the pros & cons based on my experience and likes:

If you like the beach, you will love this place. Plenty of beaches and smaller islands that can be visited.
If you like water sports, you will love this place. I used to practice spearfishing, fishing and boating.
If you like riding your bike, walking or running you will love this place. The only mode of private transportations is bike, if you don’t like bikes you can walk or wait for the bus.
If you like small town feel, you will love this place. Everyone will be in your business like it or not, nothing that you do will be unnoticed, so be a good ambassador.
If you are a social person, you will love this place. Plenty of community social gatherings and impromptuous ones too.
If you like to travel, you will love this place. You are in an area that is a getway to the Asia and the Pacific. Plenty of other countries that can be visited.

If you are on the technology field, you will hate this place. Why, if you have profesional certs to maintain, the last that I checked, you cannot do testing on island you will have to fly to HI for that ($).
If you enjoy social media and online gaming, you will hate this place. Why, no broadband available at this time in the island. There is free internet, free dialup internet.
If you enjoy investing time with friend and familly, you will hate this place. Look at where you are going to be living, not a lot of flights to and from and also the cost is hight. No foreing nationals allow on post either, so have that in mind if you are married to a foreing national.
If you are expecting to get a big check, you will hate this place. Based on all the overseas contracts that I have worked, this one paid the least.

    Based on my experience:

If you are a single adventurerous guy and or gal and their main motivation is to experience something new and travel. This will be the place for you, plus you can save a little money. Usually you (singles) will get a dining card, because you will get a BQ aka a dorm room without a kitchen. Hence, why you get a meal card, because you won’t be able to cook in your room. You won’t pay for your utilities, except for phone, it can get expensive if you are going to call outside the “U.S.”. You get one return trip a year to visit family or a return if you complete your contract, you don’t complete the contract you don’t get your relocation and it can be expensive or you will have to sell all you cannot carry with you.

If you are a head of household, well it is a great place to bring the little ones, but not a good one for teenagers. Also, if you have a family of 4 or more, make sure you are planning to stay more than a couple of years. That way you can recover from the investment of moving into the island. For families, they will provide a house, but no meal cards. The homes all have kitches, and you will be buying groceries and doing your own cooking like the use, but a bit more expensive due to costs associated to transport of the goods. Also, the jobs for the spouses are even more excarese here than in othe posts, so don’t expect to get a job if you are a dependant.

Well, hope this helps and wish you all luck!

I have lived and worked in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait Greece, among other foreign locations. All these assignments had their pros and cons.
Living and working on Kwajalein Atoll will certainly be rewarding and no worse than other overseas locations, military or civilian.

    I look forward to this.

I am eager to seek contract opportunities at the Islands once again. I was there in 1980 & imagine SO much has changed & been upgraded. The contract work was stress free & the recreational opportunities are unlimited. The scuba diving is only second to that in Egypt & the experience will remain with you for a lifetime. The weather is consistently pleasant & individuals could ask for nothing more than an environment such as this offers. I am a 3 yr. middle east veteran, U.S.A.F. crash/structural operator-engineer & am anticipating an extended contract overseas. The $ IS NOT 1st priority, as stability, consistency & safety are my top priorities. Please, don’t hesitate to e-mail me with any & all contract opportunities as they come available. Is there a chapel/church facility available? Best regards D.W. Moses E-mail: [email protected]

Okay – here is the information on Kwajalein Range Services – For the most part it is a good company to work for – not great. They have brilliant people in the company, but many of the managers are put into position through friendships and nepotism. The Quality Department is no such thing, the Safety and Health Department has brilliant people but are often limited to budgetary issues. The IT personnel have good people, but the pay is so low that you have to be financially secure to move out here I took a 60% pay cut to move here for personal reasons. The medical insurance is so bad, that many individuals have gone bankrupt paying for their bills (recently as much as $12,000) therefore, you MUST be 100% healthy to get here. The diving is amazing and there is so much to do that you are never bored, however, it is also very “cliqueish” and only the people working missions or in management positions are viewed as important. Don’t even try to become friends with any of the Army personnel just isn’t going to happen. There is limited to no vegetables and fruits many times during the week and we only get a shipment of them once a week. Sometimes not even then. If you are allergic to mold – don’t come out here, it is everywhere including in your home. You will not get rid of it without doing your own cleaning and maintenance. If you go to the company called Chugache, it is run by an SOB that has no respect for others or safety and health. You can be guaranteed to be treated poorly. So if you are still interested in taking at least a 40% pay cut people will not look here, go to POC job board and look there. Nobody will be looking at your resume here – oh – and you will have to be an American citizen although your wife can be a foreign citizen. Happy hunting.

I am hard-working warehousing/logistics professional with 10 years of experience running the efficient operation of company warehouses and storerooms. My background has included supervising staff, stock take, maintaining inventory levels, loading/unloading, receipts and despatch, safe use of forklifts and other equipment, and dealing with AQIS and customs.
As warehouse manager i supervise a team of 30 staff and am responsible for training, instructing and supervising. Many of my staff members are young and inexperienced so it is vital that I provide comprehensive training, maintain motivation levels and offer plenty of feedback, especially in regards to safety hazards.
In addition, I am a highly organised person, with strong time management, decision-making and problem-solving skills. In my present position, as well as my previous position, my role involves balancing many responsibilities, including maintaining stock levels and providing on-floor customer service, in addition to staff management. I am required to prioritise tasks and ensure that the warehouse is running smoothly at all times.
With a strong commitment to the safety of my sites and teams, I have been nominated as a member of the safety committee in a number of my roles. I have in-depth knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety and always follow Workplace Health and Safety Regulations.Experience of DOD contracting whit international companies in Macedonia Jordan Liberia.
