Summary

I initially qualified as a Design Draughtsman with the Corps of Royal Engineers UK Army, I cover both Civil/Structural as well as having an Architectural acumen. I am also experienced in contract management with both Engineering and Architectural consultancies; this has aided me in diversifying my career within Commercial, Design and Project Management positions.

Desk Officer Ground Systems (GS) Dec2018 – to date Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Duties Include: Desk Officer responsible to AHGS (Assistant Head Ground Systems) for monitoring in-service support of all construction projects for the Royal Saudi Airforce (RSAF) and Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) under the Saudi British Defence Cooperation Programme (SBDCP) and SALAM programme.
Projects: Varying new build, extension and refurbishment throughout Saudi Arabia. – Project values vary.

Pre-construction Manager/Design Manager Oct2015 – Jul2018 Robertson Construction Tayside Ltd.
Duties Include: Robertson Tayside is a newly established regional office within the Robertson Group, where my role was to service a level of existing projects and set-up varying Design Management administration procedures. I will also direct, lead and manage the project design teams to deliver Tender submissions, pre-construction phase elements and develop the design, ensuring Value Engineering on HUB and SCAPE Framework contracts. Delivery of current onsite projects in a roaming role, ensuring drawn documentation is supplied on time to meet budget within all specified project parameters i.e., quality, safety, and functional.
Projects: Varying new build schools, as well as new competitive tenders for varying projects within the Dundee, Tayside and Angus catchment area. – Project values up to £100 million.

Design Manager May2012 – Oct2015 Sir Robert McAlpine
Duties Included: Fulfil the role of Bid Design Manager and subsequent site delivery team to, manage/assist in the production of the contractor’s proposals, ensuring they are complete and unambiguous.
Produce, agree and manage, consultant’s appointments, matrix of responsibilities, a realistic design programme and information requirement schedule to satisfy design, procurement and construction requirements. Manage the design on site with the assistance of other site-based resource, ensuring that all design deliverables are reviewed to establish they are within budget, are fully coordinated and are buildable.
Projects: Part of IPD (Invitation to Participate in Dialogue) bid team to deliver tender documents for The City of Glasgow College Campus, a new college campus over two existing sites for the Glasgow Colleges. These purpose built campuses will house schools from both the John Allan colleges and the Nautical College of Glasgow. – Approx. Value £200 million.
Currently working on Fife Park Phase 3 – St Andrews, a student residential accommodation scheme, consisting of a mix of traditional and timber kit construction, over 2, 3 and 4 storey heights. – Value £14 million.
Design Manager (Contract) May2011 – May2012 Kier Build

Duties Included: Help in evaluating tender documents to assess risk and agree actions to enable Kier build to prepare and deliver a winning tender. Assist with determination and selection of best organisations to provide design services. Programme the design deliverables in accordance with bid programme, budget and other requirements. Management the design contracts and/or agreements to cost, quality and programme. Manage and co-ordinate the delivery of engineered designs solutions from external parties. Organise, coordinate and manage Design Team Meetings, establish schedule of further meetings with designers to co-ordinate the design development.
Consider varying design options and encourage consideration of alternative design solutions to improve the bidding position.
Review Planning and Statutory Authority Approvals process and make recommendations regarding same, including any qualifications within Contractor’s Proposals.
Help to finalise Kier construction contract proposals with Design Manager, Senior Estimator, Commercial Manager and others in the team.

Assistant Project Manager (Contract) Apr2010 – Apr2011 Scottish Prison Service.

Duties Included: Most recently involved with the preparation of Employers’ Requirements for the Contract Documentation which accurately and comprehensively defines SPS Shotts Phase 2 ITT, formulating the structure and scoring mechanism for a comprehensive evaluation process.
Select and appoint the CDM Coordination aspects of the HMP Grampian project, to help in the selection of Design Services. Preparation of the PQQ submission and evaluation process. Finalise Briefs, Specifications and Room Data Sheets to present a successful and competitive ITT. Apart from my direct bid coordination involvement, I aided in the successful delivery of varying projects to time, budget and quality, efficiently and effectively managing associated activities for successful project completion, representing the SPS’ interest, utilising my professional skills, knowledge and experience to improve the SPS Estate.
Projects: Delivery of ITT documents for HMP Shotts Phase 2 and design and develop an ‘Exemplar Design’ including preparation of associated ITT documents for procuring HMP Grampian – Approx. Values £22 million and £100+ million respectively.

Duties Included: Direct, lead and manage the project design teams to deliver Tender submissions, pre construction phase elements and develop the design, ensuring Value Engineering. Be actively involved in the delivery strategy.

Projects: Mixed development of a 1x 20 storey and 2x 17 storey concrete framed Residential towers with a 7 storey steel frame high specification fit-out Commercial building on a tight city centre site in Glasgow, both with a variety of Curtain walling, rain screen and render cladding with traditional and bespoke masonry elements – Approx.
