Security company G4S is refusing to address concerns over its involvement in the running of the U.S. prison at Guantánamo Bay.

The human rights and legal charity Reprieve submitted a complaint to the UK government earlier this year, arguing that G4S has breached OECD Guidelines because of its contract to supply ‘base support operating services’ at Guantánamo Bay. The nature of support services provided by G4S are not made clear, and the company has refused to give further details about the $113 million contract, prompting concerns that G4S could be contributing to the abuse of detainees at the prison.

A G4S security guard warned that the Manus Island detention facility was “totally unprepared” for a major incident months before an Iranian asylum seeker was killed in violent clashes at the centre. Paul Skillen, who worked as a security supervisor, emailed colleagues in November with concerns that poorly trained workers were manning the facility, “a tinderbox ready to ignite”.

The emails have been given to a Senate inquiry investigating events at the centre in February that left 62 detainees injured, one with gunshot wounds. Reza Barati, 23, an Iranian asylum seeker, was killed by multiple blows to his head during the confrontations. In his emails, Mr Skillen warned that local Papua New Guinean workers were being assigned to high-risk roles with no experience and limited training. He said the structure of the incident response team was not working and needed revision.

Merry Christmas all. One of these jokers just swallowed a pair of nail clippers. RALMFAO. A Christmas I shall not easily forget,” Powell posted in his publicly accessible profile. RALMFAO stands for “rolling around laughing my freaking ass off”.

G4S, the security company which has lurched from crisis to crisis over the past two years, is facing an investigation by international authorities into its alleged activities in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. Sources said the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) UK staff have indicated that it will be investigating the company’s work supplying Israeli security services.

It is alleged that G4S provides Israel with surveillance equipment at its checkpoints in the occupied territories, although the precise nature of the equipment is not known. The OECD, which operates under the umbrella of the Department of Business in the UK, is expected to investigate whether the supply of such kit is in contravention of its guidelines for multinational enterprises – a set of Government-backed recommendations for “responsible business conduct” overseas.

Bill GatesThe Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust and Cascade Investment, an asset management firm owned by Bill Gates - one of the world's richest people - increased their combined holding in G4S to 3.2 percent last week by acquiring around 6 million more shares, G4S said on Monday.

G4S, which runs services such as cash transportation and prison management in over 125 countries, suffered a blow to its reputation when it failed to provide a promised 10,400 guards for the London Games. Following a profit warning in May, its chief executive stepped down last month.

Gates's investments range from stakes in the Canadian National Railway Co. to global drinks group Diageo and British carpet firm Carpetright.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, founded by Gates and his wife in 2000, works to eradicate the world's most deadly diseases and poverty.

The beleaguered security company that failed for months to hire enough civilian guards to staff gates at U.S. Forces Korea installations is getting the ax.

British-based G4S is being phased out immediately, with a new security firm scheduled to take over all security operations completely by the end of October, the U.S. Army Installation Management Command Pacific Region said in a statement Friday.

The statement offered little information about the change, including why G4S is being replaced, how new provider C&S Corp. was selected or how much C&S will be paid.

An IMCOM Pacific spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment in Honolulu, where it was past business hours when the turnover was announced.

South Korean Guards Want Pay Raise from New Employer… Threaten Strike

Union officials say South Korean security guards at U.S. Forces Korea installations are strongly considering a strike if their new employer doesn't give them a raise.

C&S Corp. was awarded a contract earlier this month to provide security at a number of USFK bases, replacing another company, G4S, that failed to hire enough guards to staff entry gates during its first four months on the job.

Guards held protests outside USFK bases for months, claiming G4S had unfairly cut their wages and lengthened their work hours. USFK troops were forced to man gates until G4S reached adequate staffing on March 23.
