RESUME WRITING TIPS: Perfecting your cover letter to reflect your military experience

From time to time I randomly read resumes and profiles submitted to our database. What is becoming increasingly apparent is some young professionals simply do not know how to apply for jobs. This is especially true for service members transitioning from the military.

The fundamental lack of understanding of how to sell yourself to a prospective employer could be the problem, so in this article, we are going to focus on your cover letter. Writing a good cover letter is your best shot at getting noticed. If a recruiter dislikes your cover letter, they won’t even look at your resume.

KEEP IT SHORT: You have about 30 seconds to show a hiring manager you are the person they are looking for. Whatever job you are applying for, be sure to tell the person reading as much about yourself as you can and why they should hire you in less than 200 words. A long-winded cover letter about the time you saved the world is a no-no.

KEEP IT SIMPLE: Saying things like "With this statement, I declare my interest in the position you have advertised on your website..” is clumsy and should be avoided. Start with a strong but simple opener, like “I'm excited to be writing to you to apply for the logistics position at JOBS R US... ” keep it conversational.

CLOSE STRONG:  Finish off by quickly explaining how your experience will help you at the job... That’s The Key. It can be done in one to two seconds so it doesn't seem like you are rambling.
