A former Army contractor in Iraq who helped to steal and sell more than $2.6 million in U.S. military property must serve nearly four years in prison. Stacey B. Hines pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and to theft of government property.

Hines, of Lacey, Washington, was employed by Raytheon and assigned to Camp Taji (TAH'-jee) in 2012 and 2013 when eight cargo containers filled with vehicle and machine parts, computers and communications equipment went missing.

SOS International LLC, Reston, Virginia, was awarded a $40,048,828 contract for base life support, Besmaya Compound, Iraq, with an estimated completion date of Jan. 1, 2017.

One bid was solicited with one received. Fiscal 2015 operations and maintenance (Army) funds in the amount of $13,333,918 were obligated at the time of the award. Army Contracting Command, Kuwait (408th) APO AE, is the contracting activity (W56KGZ-15-C-5000).

As the Iraq crisis deepens, some commentators have taken to inaccurately comparing it to the situation in Afghanistan. Predictions have been made that, a few years after the withdrawal of international forces, Afghan security forces would crumble in the face of the insurgency and the Taliban would retake most of the southern and eastern provinces.

Then supposedly, the Pakistani Taliban would merge with the Afghan Taliban and together would announce an Islamic State under the leadership of the already declared commander of the faithful, Mullah Mohammed Omar. Subsequently, al-Qaeda and other global jihadist organisations would come back to their old bases in Afghanistan.
