About a hundred yards into Iraq, we stopped to pick up weapons. A half dozen Kurds in white Citroëns met us in a trash-strewn lot just over the border from Kuwait. They were unloading the guns onto the trunk of one of their cars as we pulled up. The pile amounted to a small armory: German MP5 submachine guns, AK-47s newly liberated from the Iraqi army, 9mm Beretta pistols, and dozens of magazines of ammunition.

IRAQ — U.S. Embassy in Iraq is the largest, most expensive embassy ever built. It employs 15,000 people and costs $750 million to build. The Embassy opened in January 2009 following a series of construction delays. The complex is heavily fortified, even by the standards of the Green Zone. Fortifications include deep security perimeters, buildings reinforced beyond the usual standard, and five highly guarded entrances.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $10,026,228 contract for labor, materials, and supplies to acquire, deliver and install security systems along the perimeter of the International Zone in Baghdad, Iraq.

Work will be performed in Baghdad, Iraq, with an estimated completion date of Dec. 27, 2022.
