Work Has Begun on Iraq’s Basra-Haditha $1.5B Oil Pipeline

IRAQ — Work has begun on Iraq’s new Basra-Haditha oil pipeline, a major infrastructure project designed to move up to 2.5 million barrels of crude oil per day from the country’s southern oil hub toward western Iraq. The project is expected to receive roughly $1.5 billion in construction funding as Baghdad looks to strengthen its internal energy network and expand future export flexibility.
The pipeline will connect Basra, Iraq’s main oil-producing region, with Haditha, a strategic location in western Iraq that could support broader regional export routes. For Iraq, the project represents more than a transportation upgrade. It is part of a larger effort to reduce pressure on existing export routes, improve energy security, and build infrastructure that can support long-term oil movement across the country.
“This is not just a pipeline story — it is an Iraq energy infrastructure story,” POC said. “With work now underway on the Basra-Haditha corridor and major oil-field support activity already expanding in southern Iraq, contractors should be watching the support ecosystem around these projects: engineering, logistics, security, HSE, camp operations, equipment movement, and long-term maintenance.”
For overseas contractors, the Basra-Haditha pipeline could become an important indicator of future support opportunities in Iraq’s energy sector. Large infrastructure projects typically require layered support around route preparation, field operations, equipment movement, workforce housing, site security, and technical services. As construction moves forward, companies tied to Iraq’s oil, construction, and logistics sectors may see increased activity connected to the project.
The full contracting picture is still developing, but the message is clear: Iraq is moving forward with another major energy corridor, and the support work around that buildout will be worth tracking.
