According to the Department of Defense (DoD) — Aegis Defense Services LLC, McLean, Virginia, was awarded a $7,652,289 contract with options for armed guards at Bagram and Jalalabad airfields in Afghanistan, with an estimated completion date of July 31, 2016.

Bids were solicited via the Internet with 15 received. Fiscal 2015 operations and maintenance (Army) funds in the amount of $7,345,299 were obligated at the time of the award. Army Contracting Command, Bagram AE, is the contracting activity (W91B4N-15-C-5005).

The Pentagon in fiscal year 2014 obligated $6.1 billion on contracts in Afghanistan, the lowest amount since FY-07, according to a new Congressional Research Service report. The number of contractors in the country has also dropped precipitously, from a high of 117,000 in March 2012 to just shy of 40,000 in December.

While the report, dated July 22, notes that contractors have averaged 50 percent or more of the DOD force in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last decade, contractors are now playing an even greater role in Afghanistan.

According to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Middle East District (TAM) has awarded URS / Megatech a $110,320,261.00 contract for the design and construction of single circuit 220-kilovolt transmission and distribution lines in Afghanistan.

The transmission lines will run from Gardez to Khost, the capitals of Paktiya and Khost provinces, in eastern Afghanistan. The project also includes the design and construction of new substations at Waza-Khvajeh and Khost. The substations will be configured to support local power distribution. The Design Build contractor will perform an assessment in Waza-Khvajeh to develop the design for 20kV distribution lines in the surrounding area.
