WASHINGTON The Obama administration plans to keep hundreds of extra troops in Afghanistan on a temporary basis next year, above the force of 9,800 that President Barack Obama had previously announced for 2015, in another sign of the challenges the United States faces as it extricates itself from a 13-year war.

U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss military planning, said the Obama administration was continuing its discussions with allied nations about how many troops NATO countries would be able to contribute to a training mission in Afghanistan, set to begin on Jan. 1 when the alliance’s long combat mission ends.

CACI International will provide the U.S. Central Command with counter narco-terrorism support across the command’s area of responsibility under a $62.5 million contract awarded through the Rapid Response 3rd Generation vehicle.

Ken Asbury, CACI president and CEO, said that the contract extends the company’s work on CENTCOM’s counter narco-terrorism mission, which aims to combat terrorism and drug trafficking and their impact on the U.S. CACI said it has supported this program for five years with program management, training and logistics services as well as subject matter personnel from military and civilian agencies.

According to the Department of Defense (DoD) — Northrop Grumman, Herndon, Virginia, was awarded a $12,473,373 contract, this sole-source, six-month extension is to provide continued support and bridging efforts while processing required approvals for the next larger follow-on ongoing contingency operations contract. Fiscal 2015 operations and maintenance (Army) funds in the amount of $12,473,373 were obligated at the time of the award.

Estimated completion date is May 20, 2015. Work will be performed in Huntsville, Alabama 72%, and Afghanistan 28%. Army Contracting Command, Redstone Arsenal (Missile), Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, is the contracting activity.
